UNBELIEVABLE: Great White Shark Literally Bites my Sailboat!! 😲 (Episode 266)
We sail from Dunedin to Stewart Island, and stop at Edwards Island where we happen to meet a cage diving boat. Next thing we know there are 5-7 great white sharks circling the boat, and one takes a little chunk out of our transom!
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

Everybody complaining about chumming the water and how “reckless/dangerous to humans” it is is (as usual) uninformed. This could be long but here’s some facts… 1) Chumming the water from boats and shore has been going on for CENTURIES. If it was going to cause more shark attacks it would’ve happened long ago 2) Sharks aren’t mindless. They are very aware that the chum/food is very different/separate from the humans in the cage. Even outside the cage, they would still know the difference. However, working them into a feeding frenzy then swimming with them would just be stupid. Don’t pet eating Lions either 3) Shark attacks have a near zero probability while also having around 85% survival rate. And half of all fatalities are provoked.. stupid games stupid prizes. 4) Things deadlier than sharks include… eating, crossing the road, significant others, lightning, driving, flying, boating, jet skiing, rip tides, swimming, jellyfish, ants, horses, deer, even dogs, and ofcourse, humans. 5) Finally, Bc I know it’ll come up, the increased attacks in/around Florida was not due to chumming. It was a direct result of a few charters in the Bahamas doing “shark dives” and hand feeding the sharks to bring them close. Unsurprisingly sharks started expecting humans to hand them fish and began biting those that didn’t. The stupid actions of a few affected an entire region and thankfully it’s been stopped.

A groovy episode all the way around. Feeding Great White Sparks for the entertainment of tourists is a bit irresponsible, because it can put both humans and the sparks in danger. Unfortunately some humans don't care about this problem, because, hey mate, there's money to be made.

Sad to see how much scarring that shark has on his nose and all the other injuries. Can only assume the nose damage is from them ramming the cages. Once again we're damaging wildlife. Please stop the cage diving. It's not natural or healthy.

Colin you are spot on about whether cage diving is a good thing. As a geriatric surfer I have total respect for any sharks especially as they are known to follow the migrating whales off the East coast of OZ, and the surfer that died off Greenmount following a white attack is a prime example of collateral damage. A surf buddy from way back that has worked on the 'Rodney Fox' cage dive boat out of Port Lincoln SA has amazing pics but like you Colin I personally believe the whites start to associate boats with food. Only a surfer 'knows the feeling.'
